The US, NATO and Military Burden-Sharing by Stephen J. Cimbala,Peter Forster Summary

This study establishes that the political, economic and military-technological changes that transform the international system also alter the way in which a state views its and others' responsibilities and burdens for responding to international crises. It assesses the distribution of the costs of raising and supporting arms of service, the risks of deploying them overseas and using them in combat or peace operations, and the extent to which members have a responsibility for maintaining international order in the context of three instances of multinational military intervention: the Multinational Force deployment in Lebanon in 1982-83; the first Persian Gulf War in 1990-91; and the UN and NATO intervention in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

THEY Cripple Society Who Are THEY and How Do They Do It? by Cleon E. Spencer Summary

People usually think of discrimination as being against black or other ethnic minorities. Think again. "THEY" Cripple Society Volumes 1 and 2 will show how it is also practiced, usually by white people, very abundantly and severely against certain good caliber white people. It is damaging to human personhood, character, career and health. The books establish that a considerable portion of the general population, in high places and low, discriminate against fine people who are exceptional in certain ways, either academically or otherwise. This discrimination cripples society by robbing it of some of its better charactered citizens - students, employees, managers, professionals and other people of sometimes outstanding ability. This story of mental abuse and mental cruelty and of the long overlooked social problem it presents, was written from the Christian perspective of the author, but it also has a message for people in the numerous secular occupations. About the Author The author, Cleon E. Spencer, has had a varied experience in commerce, industry, and as a minister of the church for many years. He has been able to combine his life experiences with those of other people he has known and/or ministered to. It is on these unique experiences in society, including the church, that the writings of this "THEY" Cripple Society Volume 2, and its preceding "THEY" Cripple Society Volume 1 are written. The author is grateful to Ada, his wife for fifty-eight years, for doing all the original computer typing on both books.

Multinational Military Intervention by Dr Peter K Forster,Professor Stephen J Cimbala Summary

War, as Clausewitz reminds, is the most uncertain of human political and social activities. It also imposes burdens. In an alliance among states for the promotion of collective defense or security, such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), burdens have to be shared. This study looks at the experience of the United States and other member states of NATO in four situations of multinational military intervention - Lebanon, the Persian Gulf, the Balkans, and South Asia - and considers the implications of nuclear arms reductions and nonproliferation for the US and NATO. Each case study represents an important period in the distribution of power, interest, and values, amounting to more than a sequential consideration of incidents of military intervention and/or conflict prevention. These politico-military challenges include a major coalition war, a traditional peacekeeping operation, an exercise in peace enforcement, and a conflict that combines counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism with stability and security operations.

Challenges in Central Banking by Pierre L. Siklos,Martin T. Bohl,Mark E. Wohar Summary

Changes in the field of central banking over the past two decades have been nothing short of dramatic. They include the importance of central bank autonomy, the desirability of low and stable inflation, and the vital role played by how central banks communicate their views and intentions to the markets and the public more generally. There remains considerable diversity nevertheless in the institutional framework affecting central banks, the manner in which the stance of monetary policy is determined and assessed, and the forces that dictate the conduct of monetary policy more generally. The global financial crisis, which began in the United States in 2007, only serves to highlight further the importance of central bank policies. The aim of this volume is to take stock of where we are in the realm of the practice of central banking and considers some of the implications arising from the ongoing crisis.
