The Child 44 Trilogy by Tom Rob Smith Summary

Tom Rob Smith's Child 44 trilogy was an immediate publishing sensation and marked the arrival of a major new talent in contemporary fiction. Named one of top 100 thrillers of all time by NPR, Child 44 hit bestseller lists around the world, won the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award and the ITW Thriller Award for Best First Novel, and was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Now, discover the entire trilogy, collected in one edition for the first time ever. Child 44 In a country ruled by fear, no one is innocent. Stalin's Soviet Union is an official paradise, where citizens live free from crime and fear only one thing: the all-powerful state. Defending this system is idealistic security officer Leo Demidov, a war hero who believes in the iron fist of the law. But when a murderer starts to kill at will and Leo dares to investigate, the State's obedient servant finds himself demoted and exiled. Now, with only his wife at his side, Leo must fight to uncover shocking truths about a killer--and a country where "crime" doesn't exist. The Secret Speech Soviet Union, 1956. Stalin is dead, and a regime once held together by fear is beginning to fracture, creating a lawless society where the police have become the criminals. A series of murders now has all of Moscow on edge, and no one--no matter how powerful or connected--seems safe. With his new and secretive homicide department, Leo Demidov investigates--only to find that he, his wife, and his two adopted daughters may be in grave danger. To save his family, Leo must make a desperate choice and face an impossible journey that may bring his redemption...or shatter their fragile future. Agent 6 Three decades. Two murders. One conspiracy. Who is Agent 6? Leo Demidov is no longer a member of Moscow's secret police. But when his wife and daughters are invited on a "peace tour" to New York City, he is immediately suspicious. Forbidden to travel with his family, Leo watches helplessly as events in New York unfold and those closest to his heart are pulled into a web of political conspiracy, betrayal--and murder. In the horrible aftermath, Leo demands only one thing: to hunt down the killer who destroyed his family. His request is summarily denied. Crippled by grief and haunted by the need to find out exactly what happened in New York, Leo takes matters into his own hands. It is a quest that will span decades, and take Leo around the world--from Moscow, to the mountains of Soviet-controlled Afghanistan, to the backstreets of New York--in pursuit of the one man who knows the truth: Agent 6.

Representing Youth by Amy L. Best Summary

From youth culture to adolescent sexuality to the consumer purchasing power of children en masse, studies are flourishing. Yet doing research on this unquestionably more vulnerable—whether five or fifteen—population also poses a unique set of challenges and dilemmas for researchers. How should a six-year-old be approached for an interview? What questions and topics are appropriate for twelve year olds? Do parents need to give their approval for all studies? In Representing Youth, Amy L. Best has assembled an important group of essays from some of today’s top scholars on the subject of youth that address these concerns head on, providing scholars with thoughtful and often practical answers to their many methodological concerns. These original essays range from how to conduct research on youth in ways that can be empowering for them, to issues of writing and representation, to respecting boundaries and to dealing with issues of risk and responsibility to those interviewed. For anyone doing research or working with children and young adults, Representing Youth offers an indispensable guide to many of the unique dilemmas that research with kids entails. Contributors include: Amy L. Best, Sari Knopp Biklen, Elizabeth Chin, Susan Driver, Marc Flacks, Kathryn Gold Hadley, Madeline Leonard, C.J. Pascoe, Rebecca Raby, Alyssa Richman, Jessica Taft, Michael Ungar, Yvonne Vissing, and Stephani Etheridge Woodson.

The Brat Stops Here! by Mary-Elaine Jacobsen, Psy.P. Summary

In her private practice, Mary-Elaine Jacobsen worked with thousands of parents to help them with their defiant, obnoxious, and challenging children. By following her program parents have seen their children's arguing, tantrums, and disobedience come to an end. In THE BRAT STOPS HERE, Dr. Jacobsen comprehensively outlines her program for giving parents the essential tools they need to set limits and expectations and follow through with their kids when they cross the line. The key to Dr. Jacobsen's program is the Privileges On/Privileges Off approach. When a child does not comply with the rules of the house (which are carefully explained to the child in an age appropriate manner), he or she loses all privileges and must earn them back by apologizing, acknowledging what they would do differently, doing what was asked of them in the first place, and performing an additional chore. Following this approach consistently over the course of five weeks will have a dramatic effect on the household--including reducing tension in the interaction between parents and children, developing skills that will help children get along better at home and at school, and laying the foundation for children to become self-sufficient, responsible adults.

Current Issues in Clinical Psychology by Eric Karas Summary

This is the third volume in the series of books based on the Annual Merseyside Course in Clinical Psychology. In common with its predecessors its aim is to present a number of topics of interest to practitioners, researchers, trainers and trainees in the field, with the intent not only to inform but variously also to question and to guide further enquiry. Selection for this volume has taken a somewhat different stance to the previous two. Whereas in former volumes an attempt has been made to cover standard areas of general and scientific interest to psychologists and others in related professions, such as anorexia nervosa, forensic issues, long term care, mental handicap, community psychology, anxiety and de pression, in this one issues which are of equal relevance but not necessarily of equal prominence in psychological texts, are included. We have not, however, neglected those areas more readily recognized as of major clinical import which are being progressively covered in this series. This year we have the section 'Bereavement and the Care of the Dying'. Although for many this may not be a main focus, it is a subject that few helpers do not encounter either directly or indirectly with their clients. It would be impossible for this subject to not reflect the most human side of the caring professions, and it is perhaps in this field that the objective/subjective dilemma of the clinician can be seen in its most acute form.

Inclusion in the Early Childhood Classroom by Susan L. Recchia,Yoon-Joo Lee Summary

In this engaging book, the authors share stories from their practice and research about several young children with a variety of developmental delays and disabilities and their teachers. They explore the ways that teachers and children respond in real classrooms to real challenges, examining both those opportunities that are capitalized on as well as those that are missed. The book addresses a wide array of issues that contribute to our understanding of what makes a difference in the inclusive early childhood classroom, including the role of development, ways of honoring different learning styles, building a sense of classroom community, addressing power dynamics, and responding to conflict with both teachers and peers. This practical resource introduces a framework that will inspire early childhood teachers to reflect on their own practices and take action to develop new strategies for teaching in inclusive classrooms.
