Dark Passage by David Goodis Summary

For the first time, the best work of a distinctive master of American noir is available in authoritative e-book editions from The Library of America. David Goodis experienced a brief celebrity when his novel Dark Passage (1946) became the basis for a popular movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. The story of a man railroaded for his wife’s murder and forced to assume a different identity after escaping from prison becomes in Goodis’s hands a lyrical evocation of urban fear and loneliness. Other David Goodis novels available as Library of America E-Book Classics include: Nightfall, The Burglar, The Moon in the Gutter, and Street of No Return.

Cynthia's heroic efforts at Dunkirk have won her the respect of the Irregulars, but her sharp tongue keeps everyone at a distance. Voices in the Dark by J. P. Telotte,J. Telotte Summary

The American film noir, the popular genre that focused on urban crime and corruption in the 1940s and 1950s, exhibits the greatest amount of narrative experimentation in the modern American cinema. Spurred by postwar disillusionment, cold war anxieties, and changing social circumstances, these films revealed the dark side of American life and, in doing so, created unique narrative structures in order to speak of that darkness. J.P. Telotte's in-depth discussion of classic films noir--including The Lady from Shanghai, The Lady in the Lake, Dark Passage, Double Indemnity, Kiss Me Deadly, and Murder, My Sweet--draws on the work of Michel Foucault to examine four dominant noir narrative strategies.

Pulp Fiction to Film Noir by William Hare Summary

During the Great Depression, pulp fiction writers created a new, distinctly American detective story, one that stressed the development of fascinating, often bizarre characters rather than the twists and turns of clever plots. This new crime fiction adapted brilliantly to the screen, birthing a cinematic genre that French cinema intellectuals following World War II christened “film noir.” Set on dark streets late at night, in cheap hotels and bars, and populated by the dangerous people who frequented these locales, these films introduced a new antihero, a tough, brooding, rebellious loner, embodied by Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon and Philip Marlowe in The Big Sleep. This volume provides a detailed exploration of film noir, tracing its evolution, the influence of such legendary writers as Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, and the films that propelled this dark genre to popularity in the mid-20th century.

Thomas Pynchon and the Dark Passages of History by David Cowart Summary

For David Cowart, Thomas Pynchon's most profound teachings are about history- history as myth, as rhetorical construct, as false consciousness, as prologue, as mirror, and as seedbed of national and literary identities. In one encyclopedic novel after another, Pynchon has reconceptualized historical periods that he sees as culturally definitive. This book offers a deft analysis of the problems of history as engaged by our greatest living novelist and argues for the continuity of Pynchon's historical vision. -- from Back Cover

Journal de Travers by Renaud Camus Summary

Massacre in Newtown by Henry Berry Summary

Henry Berry lives about 20 miles south of Newtown in Fairfield County. A lifelong resident of Connecticut, like many others across the country, he was shocked, alarmed, and confused by the scale and savagery of the shootings of more than 20 children and adults in Newtown on December 14, 2012. His book "Massacre in Newtown - Adam Lanza's Dark Passage to Madness" is an effort to try to gain a grasp of this horrible event for whatever consolation and peace this may offer. "Massacre in Newtown" analyzes and evaluates many details of actions and decisions Adam Lanza is known to have made leading up to the moment when he burst into Sandy Hook Elementary School heavily armed to murder so many helpless, trapped individuals. Published before the completion and release of the unofficial Connecticut report on the massacre, in taking up widely-reported, confirmed facts of the event and its timeline, this early study is germane and insightful. Drawing on his lifelong pursuits of psychology, literary studies, art criticism, philosophy, and cultural studies for "Massacre in Newtown - Adam Lanza's Dark Passage to Madness," Henry Berry uncovers sources and follows the process eventuating in an unspeakable, unimaginable episode of madness.

Film Noir by Mark Bould Summary

"Film Noir explores the murky world of a genre responsible for many of film's most enduring images. Mark Bould discusses problems of definition and the often ambiguous nature of film noir and looks at contemporary 'neo-noir' films. Iconic and enduring, film noir attracted great stars (Bogart, Bacall, Mitchum, Lancaster), many of the best directors of the postwar period (Wilder, Lang, Preminger, Hawks, Siodmak, Welles) and in considering the history and continuing importance of noir, from Weimar Cinema to Sin City, this book is an indispensible guide to this still popular genre."--
