I'll Stand by You by Elissa Montanti Summary

"This may be the book that changes your life."—Siobhan Fallon, author of You Know When the Men Are Gone “The saint of Staten Island” (People magazine) shares the inspirational story of how she’s changing the world, one child at a time. Over a decade ago, Elissa Montanti was reeling from the loss of several loved ones when she decided to work past her grief by collecting school supplies for Bosnian children. Then a U.N. ambassador showed her a photo of Kenan, a young boy who had lost both arms and one leg to a landmine. Elissa invited Kenan and his mother into her home, arranging free airfare, prosthetics, and medical care. Operating out of her apartment’s walk-in closet, Elissa’s Global Medical Relief Fund has since helped more than one hundred and fifty children from twenty-two countries injured in war zones and natural disasters around the world. I’ll Stand by You recounts Elissa’s remarkable story and how—in helping these children—she healed herself.

Coming Full Circle: One Woman’S Journey Through Spiritual Crisis by Carol L. Noyes Summary

Her journey of recovery from bipolar disorder and her insights are described in this book, an autobiography of Carol Noyes. When Carol went through mid-life crisis in the spring of 2006 her world was turned upside-down. Carol was able to wean herself off drugs, after over four years on psychiatric medications. She found natural alternatives that effectively helped her to recover and to lead a productive life. Carol believes that the current medical paradigm is inadequate and often unable to help individuals to heal and to bounce back. Carol nearly died from a combination of the swine flu and lithium poisoning. Her descent to the bottom of the metaphorical well provided the impetus for her to research non-drug therapies. These therapies, along with faith, hope, and courage, brought Carol back to a peaceful life. Carol recounts her life and investigates the factors that precipitated imbalance. She writes about her extraordinary experiences during expanded states of consciousness. She also delves into the world of symbols and mythologies, describing how they became poignant for her. Carol calls her experience a time of spiritual awakening; a time of developing self-esteem, learning to love herself, and finding her true purpose. She hopes that her insights will help others going through spiritual crisis. Those interested in humanistic psychology, personal growth, and spirituality may find this book fascinating.

The Pill That Steals Lives - One Woman's Terrifying Journey to Discover the Truth About Antidepressants by Katinka Newman Summary

While going through a divorce, documentary filmmaker Katinka Blackford Newman took an antidepressant. Not unusual – except that things didn't turn out quite as she expected. She went into a four-day toxic psychosis with violent hallucinations, imagining she had killed her children, and in fact attacking herself with a knife. Caught up in a real-life nightmare when doctors didn't realise she was suffering side effects of more pills, she went into a year-long decline. Soon she was wandering around in an old dressing gown, unable to care for herself, and dribbling. She nearly lost everything, but luck stepped in; treated at another hospital, she was taken off all the medication and made a miraculous recovery within weeks. By publicising her story, Katinka went on to make some startling discoveries. Could there really be thousands around the world who kill themselves and others from these drugs? What of the billions of dollars in settlements paid out by drug companies? Could they really be the cause of world mass killings, such as the Germanwings pilot who took an airliner down, killing 150, while on exactly the same medication as the author when she became psychotic? And how come so many people are taking these drugs when experts say they are no more effective than a sugarcoated pill for people like her, who are distressed rather than depressed? Moving, frightening and at times funny, this is the story of how a single mum in Harlesden, North-West London, juggles life and her quest for love in order to investigate Big Pharma. Dr. Robert Sardello, author and director of the School of Spiritual Psychology. "An inspiration to cancer patients and enjoyable reading for anyone with or without cancer. Lee Sturgeon Day engages the big questions and life's trivial absurdities with equal vigor, captivating the reader with rare courage, wisdom and rollicking good humor." Undercover Policing by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Home Affairs Committee Summary

There needs to be a fundamental review of the law governing undercover police operations, including the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000. The Committee recommends the publication of a consultation paper before the next election, with a view to publishing draft legislation at the beginning of the next Parliament. The Committee finds that there is an unsatisfactory degree of ambiguity in the current legal framework governing undercover operations and that the current legislation "fails adequately to safeguard the fundamental rights of the individuals affected". The use of the identities of dead children to create cover identities for undercover officers could potentially have put bereaved families at risk. There should be a full and unambiguous apology from the forces concerned to the families and the practice should never be followed in future. Operation Herne, which is investigating these allegations, has already cost £1.2million and has not yet made any arrests. It should be brought to a conclusion as swiftly as possible, so that families and victims involved can achieve closure

And he is, sitting in the corner of a café she enters almost at random. They talk. He touches her. She turns away and when she looks again he is gone. Was he there? Had she dreamed him? And why, when he emails her out of the blue two days later, does he write as though they haven't met for twenty years?
