Where are the Voices Coming From? by Coral Ann Howells Summary

This collection of essays focuses on Canadian history and its legacies as represented in novels and films in English and French, produced in Canada mainly in the 1980s and 1990s. The approach is both cross-cultural and interdisciplinary, aiming at articulating Canadian differences through a comparison of anglophone and francophone cultures, illustrated by works treating some of the different groups which make up Canadian society - English-Canadian, Québecois, Acadian, Native, and ethnic minorities. The emphasis is on the problematic representation of Canadianness, which is closely bound up with constructions of history and its legacies - dispossession, criminality, nomadism, Gothicism, the Maritime. The English/French language difference is emblematic of Canadian difference; the two-part arrangement, with one section on Literature and the other on Film, sets up the pattern of relationships between the two forms of cultural representation that these essays explore. Essays in the Literature section are on single texts by such writers as: Margaret Atwood, Tomson Highway, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Anne Michaels, and Alice Munro; Gabrielle Roy, Anne Hébert, Antonine Maillet, Bernard Assiniwi, and Régine Robin. The Film section with its mirror structure both supplements and amplifies this dialogue, extending notions of Canadianness with its emphasis on voices from Quebec and Acadia traditionally 'othered' in Canadian history. Filmmakers treated include: Phillip Borsos, Atom Egoyan, Ted Kotcheff, Mort Ransen, and Vincent Ward; Denys Arcand, Gilles Carle, Alanis Obomsawin, Léa Pool, and Jacques Savoie.

The Difference Christ Makes by Charlie M. Collier Summary

"The papers and responses in this volume were delivered, fittingly, on All Saints Day, 2013, as part of a day-long event to celebrate the career of Stanley Hauerwas, upon the occasion of his retirement from the faculty of Duke Divinity School. . . . [T]he central message of the day was encapsulated in the theme of the whole event: "The Difference Christ Makes." As the different speakers talked about Stanley's paradigm-changing impact on scholarship, one insight came ever more clearly into focus: the deepest theme of Stanley's work, the consistent thread running through all his thought, is his emphasis on the centrality of Jesus Christ. At the end of the day, his work is not defined by the ethics of character, or by pacifism, or by countercultural communitarian ecclesiology. All these elements play important roles in his writings, but they are reflexes or consequences of his more fundamental commitment to think rigorously about the implications of confessing Jesus Christ as Lord." --from the foreword by Richard B. Image Technologies in Canadian Literature by Carmen Concilio,Richard J. Lane Summary

The eight essays in Image Technologies in Canadian Literature reveal the ongoing importance of film and photography in the production of Canadian literary narratives. Covering modern to cutting-edge postmodern and postcolonial authors, the role of image texts and technologies is thoroughly investigated in relation to translation, performance, history, memory, point-of-view, picture poetics, and dialectical images; authors covered include Michael Ondaatje, Daphne Marlatt, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Robert Kroetsch, Joseph Dandurand and Stan Douglas. The resulting engagement with some of the key theorists of film and photography, such as Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, and Susan Sontag, leads to a lively contribution to the study of hybrid forms of Canadian literature and its key theoretical/image texts.

A l'ouest rien de nouveau by Erich Maria Remarque Summary

The Fallon Blood by Robert Jordan,Reagan O'Neal Summary

From phenomenally successful fantasy author Robert Jordan (The Wheel of Time), writing as Reagan O'Neal, comes The Fallon Blood, a splendid story of the American Revolution. In 1765, Michael Fallon, an Irishman on the run from brutal English overlords, makes his way to Charleston, South Carolina, as an indentured servant. Bound over to Thomas Carver, a successful merchant, he quickly shows a knack for trade -- and a disturbing attraction to Carver's beautiful, sensual daughter, Elizabeth. With luck and intelligence -- and not without bloodshed -- he rises into the rice-planting aristocracy of the Carolina Lowcountry, where a frontier spirit pulses beneath the superficial trappings of an agrarian society that is heading rapidly toward revolution. Michael Fallon hopes for peace. But the winds of war are rising, and the planter must become a privateer.... And the early dalliance with Elizabeth leaves a bitter aftertaste.... This novel follows the less familiar Southern course of the war, including the battles of Cowpens, King's Mountain, and Eutaw Springs (the bloodiest battle on the continent until Shiloh); and brings onto center stage such notables as Ben Franklin, Cornwallis, the Swamp Fox Francis Marion, the British Colonel "Butcher" tarleton, Colonel William Moultrie, the Marquis de Lafayette -- and a true cast of thousands! Queer Postcolonial Narratives and the Ethics of Witnessing by Donna McCormack Summary

Queer Postcolonial Narratives and the Ethics of Witnessing is a critical study of the relationship between bodies, memories and communal witnessing. With a focus on the aesthetics and politics of queer postcolonial narratives, this book examines how unspeakable traumas of colonial and familial violence are communicated through the body. Exploring multisensory epistemologies as queer and anti-colonial acts of resistance, McCormack offers an original engagement with collective and public forms of bearing witness that may emerge in response to institutionalized violence. Intergenerational, communal and fragmented narratives are central to this analysis of ethics, witnessing, and embodied memories. Queer Postcolonial Narratives and the Ethics of Witnessing is the first text to offer a sustained analysis of Judith Butler's and Homi Bhabha's intersecting theories of performativity, and to draw out the centrality of witnessing to the performative structure of power. It moves through queer, postcolonial, disability and trauma studies to explore how the repetition of familial violence – throughout multiple generations –may be lessened through an embodied witnessing that is simultaneously painful, disturbing and filled with pleasure. Its focus is selected literary texts by Shani Mootoo, Tahar Ben Jelloun and Ann-Marie MacDonald, and it situates this literary analysis in the colonial histories of Trinidad, Morocco and Canada.

Here Comes the Bride by Ken Hutcherson Summary

In this paperback release of Here Comes the Bride (formerly titled The Church), Pastor Ken Hutcherson reveals how God's original intention for His church has been distorted under stifling layers of tradition, denominationalism, racism, and fear. Many of today's believers jump from one congregation to another, searching in vain for the "real thing." Hutcherson calls us back to the book of Acts to find a church that's bold, energetic, empowered, and unstoppable. He underlines God's unchanging heart for the church -- and His unchanging will for us to be a people of truth, power, reconciliation, and love.
