The Forsyte Saga: The Man Of Property by John Galsworthy Summary

The most critical in the series about the Forsyte family by John Galsworthy is the novel The Man of Property. The Forsytes provide proper care for their wealth; they don’t produce anything and are only concerned about investing their money in order to receive profit in the form of dividends. Persuasively and in details the author shows split of the family where life of its representatives was dominated by the husband and owner in one person. The fate as tragedies and peripeteias chase the Forsytes.

The Forsyte Saga. Indian Summer of a Forsyte & In Сhancery by Galsworthy J. Summary

The three novels which make up The Forsyte Saga chronicle the ebbing social power of the commercial upper-middle class Forsyte family between 1886 and 1920. Soames Forsyte is the brilliantly portrayed central figure, a Victorian who outlives the age, and whose baffled passion for his beautiful but unresponsive wife Irene reverberates throughout the saga. Written with both compassion and ironic detachment, Galsworthy's masterly narrative examines not only their fortunes but also the wider developments within society, particularly the changing position of women in an intensely competitive male world. Above all, Gallsworthy is concerned with the conflict at the heart of English culture between the soulless materialism of wealth and property and the humane instincts of love beauty and art.

He is jealous of her friendships and wants her to be his alone. He concocts a plan to move her to the country, to Robin Hill and a house he is having built, away from everyone she knows and cares. he resists his grasping intentions, and falls in love with the architect Philip Bosinney who has been engaged by Soames to build the house. Bosinney returns her love although Bosinney is the fiancé of her young friend June Forsyte, the daughter of Soames's estranged cousin 'Young' Jolyon.

© eClassica, 2019
