I Ching by N.A Summary

The I Ching (Yijing) is an important text in the canon of world literature. It is also a divination tool familiar to millions of modern users. Books on the I Ching tend to approach it exclusively as one or the other: literary text or oracle. This annotated translation is designed to reconcile a century of provocative new scholarship with the function of divination for the modern reader. The most exciting new scholarship illuminates the epic tale of wise King Wen, valorous King Wu, and the rise of the Zhou dynasty. The emergence of this wonderful story explains countless cryptic allusions in the I Ching. It also provides an elegant way to recover the divinatory function for the modern reader, and suggests how it may have functioned for the original diviners. In this view, to make a divination is to read the moment against the dynasty change narrative -- truly to "consult King Wen."

I Ching: An Annotation by Zhongyuan Cai Summary

I Ching is a well-known ancient Chinese philosophical work and is also an only philosophical work in the world which studies how things operate, change and develop with symbols as its tenet. Based on the dualism of yin and yang, it classifies the properties of Heaven and Earth and all created things by virtue of images. And it divides all the laws existing in nature into sixty-four parts. Fuhsi summed up the theories of the Eight Trigrams by observing the phenomena of astronomy, geography and human affairs. Likewise, based on the Eight Trigrams, King Wen continued to make each trigram overlap with the other (including with itself) and advance the theories of the Sixty-four Hexagrams by observing the phenomena of astronomy, geography and human affairs. Later, Chou Kung (Duke of Chou) continued to replenish and refine the book and Confucius and many other scholars continued to improve and polish it as a complete philosophical work. Besides, Yen Emperor’s Lien Shan and Yellow Emperor’s Kuei Ts’ang failed to be passed on to the subsequent generations.

The Numerology of the I Ching by Taoist Master Alfred Huang Summary

The first book to cover the complete Taoist teachings on form, structure, and symbol in the I Ching. • Provides many new patterns and diagrams for visualizing the layout of the 64 hexagrams. • Includes advanced teachings on the hosts of the hexagrams, the mutual hexagrams, and the core hexagrams. • Written by Taoist Master Alfred Huang, author of The Complete I Ching. The Numerology of the I Ching is the first book to bring the complete Taoist teachings on form, structure, and symbol in the I Ching to a Western audience, and it is a natural complement to Alfred Huang's heralded Complete I Ching. It examines not only the classic circular arrangement of the eight trigrams but also the hidden numerology in this arrangement and its relationship to tai chi and the Chinese elements. Huang explains the binary code underlying the I Ching, the symbolism behind the square diagram of all 64 hexagrams, and Fu Xi's unique circular layout of the 64 hexagrams, completely unknown in the West. Entire chapters are devoted to such vital material as the hosts of the hexagrams, the mutual hexagrams, and the core hexagrams--all barely hinted at in previous versions of the I Ching. With appendices listing additional symbolism for each hexagram, formulas for easily memorizing the Chinese names of the sixty-four hexagrams, and much more, The Numerology of the I Ching is a must for serious I Ching students.

The Emotional I Ching by Chris Lofting Summary

(Hardcover) This book presents the I Ching as an example of a language, a language of the vague, and as such shows the ability of the I Ching to describe itself by reference to itself. This association with language allows for linking yang/yin with fight/flight - the language we call "emotions". Through consideration of current research into emotions, the book brings out the ability to translate the language of primary emotion into the language of yang/yin and so present a more consistent, precise, yang/yin interpretation of any situation given an emotional assessment of that situation. The appendix introduces a more general perspective on meaning derivation given our current knowledge about our neurology and the creation of symbols and metaphors.

The I Ching by Richard J. Smith Summary

How the I Ching became one of the most widely read and influential books in the world The I Ching originated in China as a divination manual more than three thousand years ago. In 136 BCE the emperor declared it a Confucian classic, and in the centuries that followed, this work had a profound influence on the philosophy, religion, art, literature, politics, science, technology, and medicine of various cultures throughout East Asia. Jesuit missionaries brought knowledge of the I Ching to Europe in the seventeenth century, and the American counterculture embraced it in the 1960s. Here Richard Smith tells the extraordinary story of how this cryptic and once obscure book became one of the most widely read and extensively analyzed texts in all of world literature. In this concise history, Smith traces the evolution of the I Ching in China and throughout the world, explaining its complex structure, its manifold uses in different cultures, and its enduring appeal. He shows how the indigenous beliefs and customs of Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and Tibet "domesticated" the text, and he reflects on whether this Chinese classic can be compared to religious books such as the Bible or the Qur'an. Smith also looks at how the I Ching came to be published in dozens of languages, providing insight and inspiration to millions worldwide—including ardent admirers in the West such as Leibniz, Carl Jung, Philip K. Dick, Allen Ginsberg, Hermann Hesse, Bob Dylan, Jorge Luis Borges, and I. M. Pei. Smith offers an unparalleled biography of the most revered book in China's entire cultural tradition, and he shows us how this enigmatic ancient classic has become a truly global phenomenon.

Understanding the I Ching by Hellmut Wilhelm,Richard Wilhelm Summary

The West's foremost translator of the I Ching, Richard Wilhelm thought deeply about how contemporary readers could benefit from this ancient work and its perennially valid insights into change and chance. For him and for his son, Hellmut Wilhelm, the Book of Changes represented not just a mysterious book of oracles or a notable source of the Taoist and Confucian philosophies. In their hands, it emerges, as it did for C. G. Jung, as a vital key to humanity's age-old collective unconscious. Here the observations of the Wilhelms are combined in a volume that will reward specialists and aficionados with its treatment of historical context--and that will serve also as an introduction to the I Ching and the meaning of its famous hexagrams.

The I Ching Companion by Jill Richards Summary

Millions of people who cast the I Ching to find answers to their deepest questions refer to the classic Wilhelm/Baynes translation of the ancient Chinese divinatory text, The I Ching or Book of Changes, published by Princeton University Press. The I Ching Companion: An Answer for Every Question is a study guide to be used in conjunction with the Wilhelm/Baynes translation. The I Ching oracle has survived millennia exactly because of its elusive nature. It is replete with phrases and imagery that are unfamiliar to the Western mind. The text in itself tells many stories from ancient China, when the Chou overthrew the Shang dynasty, and contains every aspect of the human experience, both secular and spiritual. Richards has compiled a concordance of the primary symbols in the Wilhelm/Baynes text -- such as "to cross the great water", "furthering", the four directions, colors, "the great man", "the inferior man", and the "superior man" -- so that students of the I Ching can conduct their own study and gain their own understanding of how the changes described by the I Ching are connected in an eternal cycle of beginning, conflict, and resolution. Richards offers detailed, yet easy-to-follow instructions for consulting the oracle. Drawing parallels between the body's chakras and the lines of a hexagram, she reveals an entirely new way in which the I Ching can be used as a tool for achieving emotional balance. The I Ching answers questions, and in so doing, peace of mind -- our life's quest -- is attained. This guide can help facilitate that quest.
