Illumination Night by Alice Hoffman Summary

Vonny lives on the island of Martha's Vineyard with her husband Andre and son Simon. Their neighbour Elizabeth, a woman in her seventies, falls from an upstairs window and her granddaughter Jody is summoned to nurse her through her convalescence. So the players are assembled for a magical story of love and loneliness, of terror and human frailty, of the mystery and grace of ordinary experience. Alice Hoffman's ability to fuse the domestic and the mythic in a narrative of such gentle yet magnetic force confirms her stature as one of the most gifted of American novelists.

Illumination Night by Alice Hoffman Summary

A “wondrous” novel of fear, desire, loss, and discovery on Martha’s Vineyard by the New York Times–bestselling author of Practical Magic and Seventh Heaven (Chicago Tribune). Elizabeth Renny has only made two decisions of consequence in her seventy-plus years. While the first, marrying her husband, had adequate results, the second—deciding she could fly from her bedroom window—is less successful. But her flight sets in motion a series of events that will forever change the lives of six residents of Martha’s Vineyard: a young boy who refuses to grow, a wife stifled by her irrational anxiety, a husband tempted by the unknown, a girl flirting with disaster, a gentle giant tortured by his size, and an old woman with nothing to lose. Praised as “an intelligent novel” by the New York Times and “achingly vivid” by Newsday, Illumination Night is a sparkling and heartbreaking narrative that explores marriage, friendship, youth, yearning, disillusionment, and desire, a book as bright and memorable as the festival of lanterns for which it is named.

Illumination and Night Glare by Carson McCullers Summary

MORE THAN THIRTY YEARS AFTER IT WAS written, the autobiography of Carson McCullers, Illumination and Night Glare, will be published for the first time. McCullers -- one of the most gifted writers of her generation, author of The Member of the Wedding, Reflections in a Golden Eye, and "The Ballad of the Sad Cafe" -- died of a stroke at the age of fifty before finishing this, her last manuscript. Editor Carlos L. Dews has faithfully brought her story back to life, complete with never-before-published letters between McCullers and her husband Reeves, and an outline of her most famous novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. Looking back over her life from a precocious childhood in Georgia to her painful decline after a series of crippling strokes, McCullers offers poignant and unabashed remembrances of her early writing success, her family attachments, a troubled marriage, friendships with literary and film luminaries (Gypsy Rose Lee, Richard Wright, lsak Dinesen, John Huston, Marilyn Monroe), and her intense relationships with the important women in her life. When she was interviewed by Rex Reed in the Plaza Hotel on her final birthday, McCullers revealed her reason for writing an autobiography: "I think it is important for future generations of students to know why I did certain things, but it is also important for myself. I became an established literary figure overnight, and I was much too young to understand what happened to me or the responsibility it entailed. I was a bit of a holy terror. That, combined with all my illnesses, nearly destroyed me. Perhaps if I trace and preserve for other generations the effect this success had on me it will prepare future artists to accept itbetter".

Unbroken Circles by Mary-Jean Miner Summary

The Methodist campground located in the small community of Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard has been beloved by generations of visitors and residents. It was here, in the years of the Civil War, that the first clusters of small Victorian homes were constructed, replacing the temporary tent platforms that provided shelter to the faithful who had come by side-wheeler to listen to the preaching emanating from the central Tabernacle. Today, these makeshift structures have been transformed into Victorian cottages of almost infinite variety, a colorful, decorative necklace of glorious, unrestrained architectural fancy and diversity. Families have gathered here for generations, not only to celebrate their faith but also to partake in the social rituals such as Grand Illumination Night with its Chinese lanterns that have become an indelible part of our heritage.

Proximity Levinas, Blanchot, Bataille and Communication by Joseph Libertson Summary

The problematic reality of an alterity implicit in the concept of communication has been a consistent attestation in formal discourse. The rapport of thought to this alterity has been consistently described as a radical inadequation. By virtue of the communicational economy which produces discontinuity and relation, illumination and the possibility of consciousness, an opacity haunts the famili arity of comprehension. Consciousness' spontaneity is limited by the difference or discontinuity of the exterior thing, of the exterior subject or intersubjective other, and of the generality of existence in its excess over comprehension's closure. An element implicit in difference or discontinuity escapes the power of comprehension, and even the possibility of manifestation. Within the system of tendencies and predications which characterizes formal discourse, however, this escape of alterity is most often understood as an escape which proceeds from its own substantiality: the unknowable in-itself of things, of subjects, and of generality. Alterity escapes the power of comprehension, on the basis of its power to escape this power. That which escapes the effectivity of consciousness, escapes on the basis of its own effectivity. For this reason, the rapport of inadequation described by the escape may function in formal discourse as a correlation. The inadequation of comprehension and exteriority may function as the vicissitude of a larger adequation. The latent principles of this adequation are power and totalization.

Can we truly understand the historical treasure map found in Genesis 1 through Revelation 22? This book brings into harmony the practical truths and Biblical truths in order to dispel dangerous deceptions and distortions. By connecting the dots of truth and pulling back the veil of mystery and confusion in this extraordinary puzzle we call life, the portrait of reality is revealed. We can discover our purpose and potential to fulfill our destiny. Revealed are opportunities to realize and apply transforming information essential to making wise decisions. You will be empowered with keys to unlock your personal success and endless treasures. I think you will find this book enlightening, thought provoking, and well documented in the authority of scripture. The truth revealed in the coming pages is the result of many questions I had years ago. Finding there were no common or consistent answers to them, I went to my Creator, the source of truth. In God’s word, I have found many amazing and consistent insights that have stood the test of time. Over the years, I have found these answers and insights have not only given me peace of mind, but have also enabled me to see many miraculous things. I believe the information contained in this book will be interesting, relevant, and useful to at least four types of people. To the Skeptic: The honest doubter can see how the Bible has logical and reasonable answers to the problems in our world. It reveals the causes and effects we see all around us, as well as the reasonable conclusions, we often don’t see in time. (Galatians 6:7) To the Truth Seeker: You may be looking at all the different religions of the world with their isolated and disconnected ideas that promote contradictions. It is important to know how to test them to find out if they have true lasting treasure or are just an illusion that temporarily makes you feel good. (John 8:32) To the Believer: It gives a foundation for our belief, connecting the facts between the origins of Genesis 1 to the destiny of Revelation 22. By examining the details and illustrating the sequences of events, we can see and understand how redemption works, as well as the many benefits available. (Acts 1:8) To the Spiritual Leader: It encourages and challenges us with truth, exposing the Deceivers’ strategy. It gives Biblical insight to the mysteries and questions of life. It helps us to envision our future rewards, reflect on our present position, and take a closer look at our past traditions and assumptions in the light of our ultimate authority, the Word of God. (Romans 16:24-27)

Profane Illumination by Margaret Cohen Summary

Margaret Cohen's encounter with Walter Benjamin, one of the twentieth century's most influential cultural and literary critics, has produced a radically new reading of surrealist thought and practice. Cohen analyzes the links between Breton's surrealist fusion of psychoanalysis and Marxism and Benjamin's post-Enlightenment challenge to Marxist theory. She argues that Breton's surrealist Marxism played a formative role in shaping postwar French intellectual life and is of continued relevance to the contemporary intellectual scene.
