Une histoire d’amour africaine by Daphné Sheldrick Summary

Out from the Shadow of Men by Laila El-Sissi Summary

"The shadow of a man is better than a roof over the head." This Arabic proverb has long described the plight of women in Egypt. Like the classic Pyramids of Giza, the culture of Egypt for the most part stands unchanged. Egyptian men continue to use the banner of Islam and antiquated interpretation of the Quran to justify controlling women. Egyptian women continue to believe God has ordered men to do so. Yet Laila El-Sissi broke the pattern. Forty years ago, when Laila, a shy and malleable 15-year-old, and her more rebellious 16-year-old sister Rawyia learn that they are betrothed to men they have never met, they refuse to live in the prison constructed by their society, hoping for a better life than that of their mothers and aunts. Running from their tyrannical father, an abusive brother, and arranged marriages to men twice their age, Laila and Rawyia risk their reputation and safety, and plot their escape. Out from the Shadow of Men tells the story of two sisters as they find the courage and joie de vivre to risk their lives and stand up to forces seemingly as large, strong and ancient as the pyramids so they can choose their futures. At its heart it is the account of two brave, intelligent girls not content to have their lives ruled by others-not even their father. It is a testament to the power of a sister, someone to stand by your side and help you realize your dreams. Rich in details of the everyday lives of middle and upper class families in Egypt, this memoir reveals what life was like-and still is like today-for Egyptian girls and women. It exposes their subjugation, lack of autonomy, and battles with the antiquated marriage laws from which they have no recourse. Written in the pitch perfect voice of 15-year-old Laila as she struggles to understand the unfair world she was born into, her story is more poignant and relevant now than ever as the "Arab Spring" and the atrocity of ISIL crimes committed against women, continues to spread across the Middle East and a growing number of women in this region fight for freedom. Despite recent laws giving women greater (though still unequal) rights, the Egypt of today is not very different from that of the 1960s. Arranged (or forced) child marriages remain common not only in the Middle East but also in Southeast Asia and Africa and among families from those regions who have emigrated to the West. Worldwide, millions of such marriages occur every year. The current revolution in Arab world has brought Islamists into power and introduced new threats to the few improvements made a decade ago. Women's rights and freedoms are still under serious attack in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and Syria and changes will come very slowly, if ever.

L'Ombre des choses à venir by Kossi Efoui Summary

FB

In the Shadow of Vichy by Joyce Block Lazarus Summary

In the immediate aftermath of World War II, a judicial case involving the custody of two Jewish orphans mushroomed into a major crisis of Jewish-Christian relations in France. A New York Times journalist called this affair «the worst religious storm of post-war France». The Finaly Affair (1945-1953), which is best understood in the context of post-Vichy anti-Semitism, came about when Catholic fundamentalist beliefs came into conflict with France's republican principles. This affair polarized the French nation and was transformed into a national crisis by the explosive power of the French press. It had lasting consequences for interfaith relations in France and for the French Jewish community. In the Shadow of Vichy captures this astonishing story of how the Church's kidnapping of two Jewish children just after World War II helped to hasten the revolutionary changes of Vatican II.

In the Shadow of the Cross by Billy Roberts Summary

The Shadow of the Cross dispels one of the greatest myths of all time, that Jesus did not die on the cross, and in fact lived on to continue his ministry.. The author makes a detailed analysis of the secret life of Jesus, that was known to the early Christians and which was suppressed later by the Church of Rome. Did Jesus really travel incognito under the name of Yuz Asaph? Did he really marry Mary Magdalene and father her children? Many religious scholars and historians believe that a 2000 year old tomb in Srinagar, Kashmir, known as the Rozabal, was the final resting place of Jesus, 'The Prophet of the Book'. In the Shadow of the Cross explores the scientific as well as the historic facts, bringing to light a truth that has lain buried beneath 2000 years of falsehood, and which culminates in the greatest conspiracy of all time.

In the Shadow of Progress by Eric Cohen Summary

We live in an age of unprecedented human mastery -- over birth and death, body and mind, nature and human nature. In every realm of life, science and technology have brought remarkable advances and improvements: we are healthier, wealthier, and more comfortable than ever before. But our gratitude for the benefits of progress increasingly mixes with concern about the meaning and consequences of our newfound powers. If we can dream about a new age of genetic medicine, we can also shudder at a new age of weapons of mass destruction. As we welcome longer lives, we wonder if we will still value human life as we should. In the Shadow of Progress: Being Human in the Age of Technology is a deep and lively reflection on the moral challenges of the technological age. Eric Cohen, a leading voice in America's bioethics debates, offers a tour of the complex dilemmas at the intersection of science and morality, moving seamlessly from contemporary subjects like stem cells and evolution to classic texts like the Hebrew Bible and Francis Bacon's "New Atlantis." Why are the wealthiest people in human history the least likely to want children? What kind of civilization will we become if we seek cures for the sick by destroying human embryos? What is lost when we relieve human sadness by altering the chemical balance of the brain, or enhance human performance by altering the biological workings of the body? In this age of scientific wonders, have we forgotten what sets human beings apart from everything else in the natural world? Can the fruits of modern science ever satisfy our deepest longings -- for love, for virtue, and for transcendence? In the end, Cohen argues, there are no easy answers. Our challenge is to live simultaneously with gratitude and fear, pride and shame, sobriety and hope, in this new age of technology.
