LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER (The Uncensored Edition) by D. H. Lawrence Summary

This novel by D. H. Lawrence was first published in 1928 and subsequently banned. Lady Chatterley's Lover is one of the most subversive novels in English Literature. The first edition was printed privately in Florence, Italy, with assistance from Pino Orioli; an unexpurgated edition could not be published openly in the United Kingdom until 1960. (A private edition was issued by Inky Stephensen's Mandrake Press in 1929.) The book soon became notorious for its story of the physical relationship between a working-class man and an upper-class woman, its explicit descriptions of sex, and its use of then-unprintable words. Lady Chatterley's Lover was inspired by the long-standing affair between Frieda, Lawrence's German wife, and an Italian peasant who eventually became her third husband; Lawrence's struggle with sexual impotence; and the circumstances of his and Frieda's courtship and the early years of their marriage.

Lady Chatterley's Lover by D. H. Lawrence Summary

The classic novel about an extramarital affair between an upper-class woman and a gamekeeper in restless post–World War I England. Constance Reid is a sophisticated girl, intellectually voracious and well-traveled, if not of the highest social class. If Sir Clifford Chatterley has to marry to please his father, the baronet, he could do far worse—and for a short time in 1917, Constance and Clifford are happy together. Then Clifford is shipped back to Flanders to continue his service in the Great War. Fortunately, unlike so many other women, young Constance Chatterley is not widowed—but her dream of motherhood is put to an end when her husband comes home from battle paralyzed from the waist down. Always a cerebral sort, Constance had not anticipated missing the physical act of love. But as the couple grows more emotionally and mentally distant from each other, she finds herself drawn to a working man, a married gamekeeper named Oliver. Once banned for obscenity, this psychologically insightful novel explores themes of sex and social class against the backdrop of an England roiled by postwar turmoil and on the verge of massive change.

Lady Chatterley's Lover by D. H. Lawrence Summary

.0000000000Connie's unhappy marriage to Clifford Chatterley is one scarred by mutual frustration and alienation. Crippled from wartime action, Clifford is confined to a wheelchair, while Connie's solitary, sterile existence is contained within the narrow parameters of the Chatterley ancestral home, Wragby. She seizes her chance at happiness and freedom when she embarks on a passionate affair with the estate's gamekeeper, Mellors, discovering a world of sexual opportunity and pleasure she'd thought lost to her. The explosive passion of Connie and Mellors' relationship - and the searing candour with which it is described - marked a watershed in twentieth century fiction, garnering Lady Chatterley's Lover a wide and enduring readership and lasting notoriety. The text is taken from the privately published Author's Unabridged Popular Edition of 1930, the last to be supervised in the author's lifetime. It also includes Lawrence's My Skirmish with Jolly Roger, his witty essay describing the pirating of this most notorious novel which was specially written as an Introduction to this edition. With an Afterword by Anna South.

Lady Chatterley's Lover by David Herbert Lawrence Summary

With her soft brown hair, lithe figure and big, wondering eyes, Constance Chatterley is possessed of a certain vitality. Yet she is deeply unhappy; married to an invalid, she is almost as inwardly paralysed as her husband Clifford is paralysed below the waist. It is not until she finds refuge in the arms of Mellors the game-keeper, a solitary man of a class apart, that she feels regenerated. Together they move from an outer world of chaos towards an inner world of fulfillment. Included here, in his essay A Propos of Lady Chatterley's Lover, are Lawrence's own, final thoughts on male-female relationships in the modern world. This Penguin edition reproduces the newly established Cambridge text, the first edition ever to restore to Lawrence's most famous work the words he wrote and the first to correct authoritatively the 1928 Florence edition which Lawrence personally supervised. @DeadFlowers Our farmhand is so aloof and Romantic. I wanna get on that. We had sex in a shack. We shacked up, har har har. I've got plenty of sex puns left, don't worry! I wonder what Oliver is doing right now ... probably plowing. Defiant desire by Kingsley Widmer Summary

Kingsley Widmer, one of the most insightful and provocative learned critics, has long had a considerable influence on D. H. Lawrence studies. Here he elaborates the crucial argument that the erotic conversion experience and its dialectic of social negation centrally define Lawrence, thus creating his major legacies. In dialectically considering all of Lawrence’s novels and many of his essays and stories, Widmer carries the issues beyond the texts to Lawrence’s literary and ideological inheritors, including Henry Miller and Norman Mailer. In addition, he imbeds Lawrence’s fictions and roles in the "dark prophecy" of affirmatively countering the Nietzschean tradition and, in a striking chapter on Lady Chatterley’s Lover explores the use of obscenity, sexual ideology, and anticlass utopianism. This is Lawrence as a major dissident culture hero with a still pertinent, drastic revisionism of human responses in a nihilistic world. It is a large and controversial critical view.
