The story comes to an end - as all stories do - but Sally and Cole were both better for having met. Although this is only a story, it is inspired by a real little girl and a real little horse. That girl, who is not little anymore, is Alexa Kullberg. And the little white horse really is Cole....

Wild Ride Home by Christine Hemp Summary

An amazingly joyous memoir told with humor and brilliant irony that illuminates the beauty of the absurdity that is life. Christine Hemp's debut work of nonfiction, Wild Ride Home, is a brilliant memoir, looping themes of finding love and losing love, of going away and coming home, of the wretched course of Alzheimer's, of cancer, of lost pregnancies, of fly fishing and horsemanship, of second chances, and, ultimately, of the triumph of love and family--all told within the framework of the training of a little white horse named Buddy. Wild Ride Home invites the reader into the close Hemp family, which believes beauty and humor outshine the most devastating circumstances. Such optimism is challenged when the author suffers a series of blows: a dangerous fiancé, her mother’s dementia, unexpected death and illness. Buddy, a feisty, unforgettable little Arabian horse with his own history to overcome, offers her a chance to look back on her own life and learn to trust again, not only others, but more importantly, herself. Hemp skillfully guides us through a memoir that is, despite devastating loss, above all, an ode to joy.

Old Men, Pregnant Women, Little Children and Beautiful White Horses by Corinne Martin Rico’t Summary

This is the story of a year in the life of an eighteen-year-old wife and mother suddenly living in a war zone. She and her husband, a jet fighter pilot, were based at Itazuke Air Force base, Fukuoka, Japan, when in the night the North Koreans invaded South Korea; the pilots of the 5th Air Force were at war. The wives based at Itazuke remained on base, facing the tragedy of lost and wounded friends and the ever-present fear of what became known as the "Death Parade." Included are letters written home by a frightened, homsick little girl, determined nevertheless to stay with her husband, yet fearful for their new baby. These letters are poignant in their simplicity. Also included are songs the pilots sang after a day of combat, songs of death and dying. This true story is unlike any other tale of the Korean War. It records a side of war little seen and seldom remembered. Whether there daily in the war zone or sitting thousands of miles away, the pilot's wife just waits.

Linnets and Valerians by Elizabeth Goudge Summary

When Nan, Robert, Timothy, and Betsy's father went off to explore in Egypt, he left the children with their grandmother who lived in the English countryside. Unfortunately she did not much like children, much less their dog, Absalom. So the children ran away to stay with their Uncle Ambrose, an eccentric, strict, and loveable retired school teacher who was determined to give them an Education, but in addition to Greek, Latin, and Literature, the Linnet children learned much more — about nature and magic, the power of the past and Pan, and, of course, the importance of the bees. They used their knowledge to find the lost Valerians, undo some very wicked, ancient spells, and reunite a divided family. The word "enchanting" is overused, but in this case it applies.

Mule Trader by William R. Ferris Summary

Readers captivated by this book will be happy that Bill Ferris found Ray Lum and that he thought to turn on a tape recorder. Lum (1891–1977) was a mule skinner, a livestock trader, an auctioneer, and an American original. This delightful book, first published in 1992 as You Live and Learn. Then You Die and Forget It All, preserves Lum’s colorful folk dialect and captures the essence of this one-of-a-kind figure who seems to have stepped full-blooded from the pages of Mark Twain. This riveting tale-spinner was tall, heavy-set, and full of body rhythm as he talked. In his special world, he was famous for trading, for tale-telling, and for common-sense lessons that had made him a savvy bargainer and a shrewd businessman. His home and his auction barn were in Vicksburg, Mississippi, where mules were his main interest, but in trading he fanned out over twenty states and even into Mexico. A west Texas newspaper reported his fame this way, “He is known all over cow country for his honest, fair dealing and gentlemanly attitude. . . .A letter addressed to him anywhere in Texas probably would be delivered.” Over several years, Ferris recorded Lum’s many long conversations that detail livestock auctioneering, cheery memories of rustic Deep South culture, and a philosophy of life that is grounded in good horse sense. Even among the most spellbinding talkers, Lum is a standout both for what he has to say and for the way he says it. Ferris’s lucky, protracted encounters with him turn out to be the best of good fortune for everybody.
