Mansfield Park by Jane Austen Summary

Introduction and Notes by Dr Ian Littlewood, University of Sussex. Adultery is not a typical Jane Austen theme, but when it disturbs the relatively peaceful household at 'Mansfield Park', it has quite unexpected results. The diffident and much put-upon heroine Fanny Price has to struggle to cope with the results, re-examining her own feelings while enduring the cheerful amorality, old-fashioned indifference and priggish disapproval of those around her. AUTHOR Jane Austen (1775 - 1817) was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism and biting social commentary have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics.

Mansfield Park by Jane Austen Summary

'"Me!" cried Fanny..."Indeed you must excuse me. I could not act any thing if you were to give me the world. No, indeed, I cannot act."' At the age of ten, Fanny Price leaves the poverty of her Portsmouth home to be brought up among the family of her wealthy uncle, Sir Thomas Bertram, in the chilly grandeur of Mansfield Park. There she accepts her lowly status, and gradually falls in love with her cousin Edmund. When the dazzling and sophisticated Henry and Mary Crawford arrive, Fanny watches as her cousins become embroiled in rivalry and sexual jealousy. As the company starts to rehearse a play by way of entertainment, Fanny struggles to retain her independence in the face of the Crawfords' dangerous attractions; and when Henry turns his attentions to her, the drama really begins... This new edition does full justice to Austen's complex and subtle story, placing it in its Regency context and elucidating the theatrical background that pervades the novel.

Approaches to Teaching Austen's Mansfield Park

Approaches to Teaching Austen's Mansfield Park by Marcia McClintock Folsom,John Wiltshire Summary

There were no reviews of Mansfield Park when it first appeared in 1814. Austen's reputation grew in the Victorian period, but it was only in the twentieth century that formal and sustained criticism began of this work, which addresses the controversies of its time more than Austen's earlier novels did. Lionel Trilling praised Mansfield Park for exploring the difficult moral life of modernity; Edward Said brought postcolonial theory to the study of the novel; and twenty-first-century critics scrutinize these and other approaches to build on and go beyond them. This volume is the third in the MLA Approaches series to deal with Austen's work (Pride and Prejudice and Emma were the subject of the first and second volumes on Austen, respectively). It provides information about editions, film adaptations, and digital resources, and then nineteen essays discuss various aspects of Mansfield Park, including the slave trade, the theme of reading, elements of tragedy, gift theory, landscape design, moral improvement in the spirit of Samuel Johnson and of the Reformation, sibling relations, card playing, and interpretations of Fanny Price, the heroine, not as passive but as having some control.

Mansfield Park: The Wild and Wanton Edition by Nina Mitchell,Jane Austen Summary

When she is 10 years old, Fanny Price is sent from her poor and large family to Mansfield Park, where she is to be raised by her wealthy aunt and uncle, Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram. Though she grows up in the same home as her four older cousins, she is often treated as a poor and ignorant relation, similar to a servant, and is not afforded the same advances into society as her more privileged relatives. But there is one among her relations who treats her as an equal. Edmund is the second son and the kind-hearted soul of the family. It is not long before Fanny’s childhood appreciation of Edmund’s kindness is transformed into a romantic love more suited to the young woman she’s become. But the fashionably wealthy and attractive brother and sister, Henry and Mary Crawford, arrive at Mansfield and create turmoil for the entire Bertram family - Mary falls for Edward, and Henry falls for all of the female cousins, though he tries to convince Fanny (and himself) that his heart belongs only to her. Will any hearts be spared? Though often described as the least romantic of Austen’s six novels, Mansfield Park comes to life when Fanny’s true romantic and passionate nature is revealed. Indeed before Edmund’s eyes Fanny’s passion and beauty surpasses that of her new and sophisticated friend, Miss Crawford. And it appears that the overly moralistic Edmund has some untapped passion of his own. Can the pursuit of pleasure be enough to bring this romance to a new level? Sensuality Level: Sensual
