Monsieur by Emma Becker Summary

A young woman in Paris discovers the dangers of passion when she pursues an anonymous affair with a married man. Elle has always had a taste for older, married men, even when she was a teenager. Now, at twenty and living in Paris, she leads a lighthearted and carefree life until she meets a man she calls “Mister.” Elle knows all she needs to know about him—that he’s married, a devoted father of five, and a devotee of classic erotic literature. Beginning with their first frenzied hook-up in a hotel room in the fifteenth arrondissement, Monsieur details the clandestine Tuesday morning hotel meetings and fleeting phone calls that span several months of sexual adventure. Generous with her body and never lacking imagination—or partners, both men and women—Elle illuminates her deviations in a fearless and ferocious confessional. From her seduction of Monsieur to its devastating aftermath, from the height of desire to a descent into cruel fantasy, Elle reveals the uninhibited fulfillment and stunning disenchantment of a twenty-first-century Lolita.

Monsieur D'Eon Is a Woman by Gary Kates Summary

Born in 1728, French aristocrat Charles d'Eon de Beaumont had served his country as a diplomat, soldier, and spy for fifteen years when rumors that he was a woman began to circulate in the courts of Europe. D'Eon denied nothing and was finally compelled by Louis XVI to give up male attire and live as a woman, something d'Eon did without complaint for the next three decades. Although celebrated as one of the century's most remarkable women, d'Eon was revealed, after his death in 1810, to have been unambiguously male. Gary Kates's acclaimed biography of d'Eon recreates eighteenth-century European society in brilliant detail and offers a compelling portrait of an individual who challenged its conventions about gender and identity.

Monsieur Bergeret in Paris by Anatole France Summary

CHAPTER I Monsieur Bergeret was seated at table taking his frugal evening meal. Riquet lay at his feet on a tapestry cushion. Riquet had a religious soul; he rendered divine honours to mankind. He regarded his master as very good and very great. But it was chiefly when he saw him at table that he realized the sovereign greatness and goodness of Monsieur Bergeret. If, to Riquet, all things pertaining to food were precious and impressive, those pertaining to the food of man were sacred. He venerated the dining-room as a temple, the table as an altar. During meals he kept his place at his master’s feet, in silence and immobility. “It’s a spring chicken,” said old Angélique as she placed the dish upon the table. “Good. Be kind enough to carve it, then,” said Monsieur Bergeret, who was a poor hand with weapons and quite hopeless as a carver. “Willingly,” said Angélique, “but carving isn’t woman’s work, it’s the gentlemen who ought to carve poultry.” “I don’t know how to carve.” “Monsieur ought to know.” This dialogue was by no means new. Angélique and her master exchanged similar remarks every time that game or poultry came to the table. It was not flippantly, it was certainly not to save herself trouble, that the old servant persisted in offering her master the carving-knife as a token of the respect which was due to him. In the peasant class from which she had sprung and also in the little middle-class households where she had been in service, it was a tradition that it was the master’s duty to carve. The faithful old soul’s respect for tradition was profound. She did not think it right that Monsieur Bergeret should fall short of it, that he should delegate to her the performance of so authoritative a function, that he should fail to carve at his own table, since he was not grand enough to employ a butler to do it for him, like the Brécés, the Bonmonts and other such folk in town or country. She knew the obligations which honour imposes on a citizen who dines at home, and she never failed to impress them upon Monsieur Bergeret.

The Ghost of Monsieur Scarron

The Ghost of Monsieur Scarron by Janet Lewis Summary

This historical novel is the third and final book in American poet and fiction writer Janet Lewis’s Cases of Circumstantial Evidence series, based on legal case studies compiled in the nineteenth century. In The Ghost of Monsieur Scarron, Lewis returns to her beloved France, the setting of The Wife of Martin Guerre, her best-known novel and the first in the series. As Swallow Press executive editor Kevin Haworth relates in a new introduction, Monsieur Scarron shifts the reader into the center of Paris in 1694, during the turbulent reign of the Sun King, Louis XIV. The junction of this time and place gives Monsieur Scarron an intriguing political element not apparent in either The Wife of Martin Guerre or The Trial of Sören Qvist. The Ghost of Monsieur Scarron begins in a small bookbinder’s shop on a modest Paris street, but inexorably expands to encompass a tumultuous affair, growing social unrest, and the conflicts between a legal system based on oppressive order and a society about to undergo harsh changes. With its domestic drama set against a larger political and historical backdrop, Monsieur Scarron is considered by some critics and readers to be the most intricately layered and fully realized book of Lewis’s long career. Originally published in 1959, Monsieur Scarron has remained in print almost continuously ever since.

Monsieur Lecoq by Emile Gaboriau Summary

A grisly triple murder occurs in a down-and-out quarter of Paris, and the petty criminal apprehended at the scene of the crime is considered clearly guilty—except by young Monsieur Lecoq. The brilliant but inexperienced young detective digs deeper into the case to discover an affair of family honor involving blackmail, secret identities, and suicide. Outwitted at every turn, Lecoq is compelled to attempt a last-ditch gamble. First published in 1869, Monsieur Lecoq is astonishingly modern and enjoyable. André Gide pronounced author Emile Gaboriau "the father of the modern detective novel," and this is Gaboriau's finest work. Energetic and keenly logical, Lecoq ranks as a significant figure in the history of detective novels; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself acknowledged the fictional sleuth's influence on his own logical mastermind, Sherlock Holmes.
