Salman the Solitary by Yaşar Kemal,Thilda Kemal Summary

Driven out of his native Kurdish village by invading Russians, Ismail Agha has built himself a house above the village of his exile. In his household is his bodyguard Salman, the Turkish boy he adopted after finding him in a cave, more dead than alive. Ismail has many enemies. In the barren mountains of Anatolia, Kemal sets a tale of vengeance and bloodlust, tender love and passionate hatred, at the centre of which is the bond that ties Ismail and young Salman, who is devoted to his master but jealous of his natural son Mustafa. Tension has existed between the two almost since Mustafa's birth but, when rumours begin to fly through Ismail's household, the knives are drawn and no-one can predict whose life will be at risk. Turkey's greatest novelist has produced an epic tale of love and death, intensified and complicated by racial prejudice.

Studien über das Reden der Dichter by Hans-Jost Frey Summary

This study of four major poets - Mallarme, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, and Holderlin - examines the self-reflexivity of modern poetry, exploring questions concerning what it means for a poem to be "about" its own process of saying. What does it mean to read and understand a text that is focused not on its content but on its saying? What kind of relation does a writer have to the language used in a text? How are we to think about the relation of content to the saying? In the chapter on Mallarme, the author uses several close readings to investigate the referentiality of literature in general and the concept of "undecidability" in Mallarme. For example, in "A la nue accablante tu" he shows the way undecidability operates in syntax, metaphorics, sounds, and plays on individual letters of the alphabet. The chapter on Rimbaud explores the significance of the poet's famous statement "JE est un autre" ("I is an other"), leading to a meditation on the question of the control of the author, the relationship between saying and that which is said, the way in which language overwhelms the speaker. In the Baudelaire chapter, the author analyzes the themes of memory and imagination in Baudelaire's writings on painting and Victor Hugo, showing how these themes reveal the writer's thoughts on artistic conception and execution. The author then reads Holderlin's hymn "Der Rhein" with the fifth of Rousseau's "Reveries du promeneur solitaire," showing how in Holderlin's poem and other texts the crucial issue is a paradoxical relationship between lack and fullness or perfection. The final Holderlin chapter presents a sustained critique of Heidegger's exegesis of Holderlin, opening new avenues in the discussions of both Holderlin and Heidegger.

Atlas of a Tropical Germany by Zafer ?enocak Summary

"Germany long ago became part of us German Turks," Zafer Senocak observes. "Are we also a part of Germany?" Gathered here for the first time in English translation, these essays chart a new orientation for German life, culture, and politics beyond the Cold War and at the dawn of an unprecedented era. The 1990s began with national unification between East and West and closed with a radical liberalization of German citizenship law; many questions about the largest minority in this multicultural Germany have yet to be asked. This decade also reeled with war in the Persian Gulf and "ethnic cleansing" in the Balkans. As Germans imagine themselves as westerners interacting with Muslim populations at home and abroad, these essays acquire a critical urgency. Senocak reconfigures the Turkish diaspora and the German nation by mapping a "tropical Germany."
