Deeper Water by Len Varley Summary

A passionate advocate for the protection and rights of whales and dolphins, author Len Varley continues the story of the captive dolphins of Taiji, Japan, and the world’s marine parks in his sequel to Salt Water Tears. Weaving recollections, observations, and eyewitness accounts together into a richly compelling tapestry, he offers up a deeper understanding of the intimate, profound, and often dangerously complicated relationship shared between cetaceans and humans. Varley tells us that the dolphins’ gift to us is reconnection—both with ourselves and our environment. He challenges us to step up to the mark as planetary guardians and to recognize that we do not possess a right of ownership over the creatures of our planet. Saying their goodbyes on leaving Taiji, Varley and his colleagues are presented with the gift of a hand-drawn Japanese kanji character by a member of the Japanese Police Special Task Force. It is the symbol for “Life, Soul and Spirit” It is a simple yet powerful acknowledgement honouring the passion and commitment of those who stand in defence of the dolphins, and it perfectly summarises the core sentiment of Deeper Water.

Valley of the Sun by Louis L'Amour Summary

Cattlemen ride alone across the open range under the deadly aim of roving desperadoes. . . . Gamblers stake their fortunes and their lives on a deck of cards. . . . Strong-willed señoritas seek independence through an enticing combination of beauty, audacity, and spirit. . . . Lawmen and outlaws walk the same dusty streets and speak a common language: Colt, Winchester, Smith & Wesson. Gritty, tough, and unflinchingly authentic, here is the West as it really was: a land where for every friend there is an enemy, for every handshake a fist, for every dispute a resolution—usually in an explosive showdown of blood and bullets. In these remarkable tales, Louis L’Amour—like the very heroes he depicts—blazes a trail across the American frontier and takes us on an unforgettable journey into the heart of our western heritage.

Postmodern, Feminist and Postcolonial Currents in Contemporary Japanese Culture by Fuminobu Murakami Summary

Using the Euro-American theoretical framework of postmodernism, feminism and post-colonialism, this book analyses the fictional and critical work of four contemporary Japanese writers; Murakami Haruki, Yoshimoto Banana, Yoshimoto Takaaki and Karatani Kojin. In addition the author reconsiders this Euro-American theory by looking back on it from the perspective of Japanese literary work. Presenting outstanding analysis of Japanese intellectuals and writers who have received little attention in the West, the book also includes an extensive and comprehensive bibliography making it essential reading for those studying Japanese literature, Japanese studies and Japanese thinkers.

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami Summary

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is a tour de force—and one of Haruki Murakami’s most acclaimed and beloved novels. In a Tokyo suburb, a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife’s missing cat—and then for his wife as well—in a netherworld beneath the city’s placid surface. As these searches intersect, he encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists. Gripping, prophetic, and suffused with comedy and menace, this is an astonishingly imaginative detective story, an account of a disintegrating marriage, and an excavation of the buried secrets from Japan’s forgotten campaign in Manchuria during World War II.
