Sybil by Flora Rheta Schreiber Summary

'How are you today?' the doctor asked. 'I'm fine', was the reply. 'But Sybil isn't. She was so sick she couldn't come. So I came instead.' Sybil is the story of a woman with sixteen separate personalities, and was instrumental in influencing the definition and diagnosis of multiple personality disorder. Sybil's diagnosis has since been called into question - but, forty years after it was first published, her story remains a gripping and disturbing account of one woman's struggle for mental stability and happiness. 'Astonishing book . . . It forces you to look at yourself and the people around you in a new way.' Doris Lessing

Sybil's Choice by Iris Sechriest Summary

Suddenly confronted with a diagnosis of brain cancer, Sybil, a young mother of two grown sons and a one-month-old grandchild, faced a dead-end diagnosis. A Spartanburg oncologist gave her a death sentence of three months without treatment. He conjectured that with chemotherapy and radiation she might possibly live a year. Sybil rejected both of those roads of no return in favor of a more promising direction. She found hope in a Florida clinical trial using a formula taken from the Aloe Vera plant (Albarin). Her choice was to take the high road of hopefulness and leave her North Carolina home to go to St. Petersburg accompanied by her mother and brother. The cheerful atmosphere inside the alternative Florida clinic, in the face of the life-threatening illnesses being treated there, impressed them from day one. The positive attitudes of both the staff and the patients kept Sybil's spirits high. She was comfortable and happy during the natural therapy without the devastating side effects of chemo. The non-invasive formula has proved successful for many cancer patients. Her choice was the best of her options. Sybil's Choice is the unforgettable story of Sybil's quest to find a cure for her cancer.

Sybil Chase by Ann Sophia Stephens Summary

Example in this ebook CHAPTER I. THE BRIDLE-PATH. A small valley cutting through a range of mountains in California—a green oasis that looked strange and picturesque in the midst of that savage scenery. The cliffs rose in a solid wall on one side to the height of many hundred feet. Dwarfed fir-trees and dead cedars were scattered along the summit, stretching up their gaunt limbs and adding to the lonely grandeur of the scene. Great masses of broken rocks, which, in some conflict of the elements, had been wrenched from their bed, projected from the rifted precipices and lay in great moss-covered boulders in the lap of the valley. On the southeastern side a break in the heart of the cliffs was covered with thrifty verdure, and, over the rocks that obstructed it, a mountain torrent rushed thundering into the valley, dividing that cradle of verdure in the middle, and abruptly disappearing through another gorge, breaking to the open country somewhat lower down, where it plunged over a second precipice with the sound of distant artillery. Just above the spot where this mountain stream cut the valley in twain, a collection of huts, tents and rickety frame houses composed one of those new villages that are so often found in a frontier country, and half a mile above stood a small ranche, with its long, low-roofed dwelling half buried in heavy vines that clambered up the rude cedar pillars of the veranda, and crept in leafy masses along the roof. Beyond this, great oaks sheltered the dwelling, and the precipice that loomed behind it was broken with rifts of verdure, which saved this portion of the valley from the savage aspect of the mountains lower down. The sunset was streaming over this picturesque spot; great masses of gorgeous clouds, piled up in the west, were casting their glory down the valley, turning the waters to gold, and, flashing against the metallic sides of the mountains, changed them into rifts and ledges of solid gems. Standing upon the rustic veranda, and looking down over the beautiful valley dotted with tents and picturesque cabins, the waters singing pleasantly, the evening wind fluttering the greenness of the trees, that mountain pass appeared so tranquil and quiet, a stranger could hardly have believed the repose only an occasional thing. In truth, it is the heavenly aspect of the valley that I have given you, and that was truly beautiful. Only a few miles off, still higher up among the rugged mountains, the "gold diggings" commenced, and from this point, every Saturday night of that beautiful summer, came down crowds of wild, reckless men with their bowie-knives, revolvers, and the gold-dust which soon changed hands either at the liquor-bar, set up in some log-cabin, or the gambling-table, established in an opposite shanty. sybil unrest by Larissa Lai,Rita Wong Summary

Originally published by LINEBooks in 2008, sybil unrest by Larissa Lai and Rita Wong draws out the interconnections between feminism, environmentalism, and personal–political responsibility, highlighting and questioning notions of "human" and "female" evident in contemporary North American culture. It does so by referencing "Popular cultural icons, political figures, business slogans, transnational corporations, and other presences in our media–saturated world [which] populate the lines," in the words of a reviewer from Asian–Am–Lit–Fans online journal . Yet sybil unrest is more than a glorious odyssey through contemporary culture. Reviewer Sophie Mayer, writing on her blog on Chroma, compares sybil unrest to works by Anne Carson and Mary Shelley. And Lauren Fournier, writing in the Fall 2011 issue of West Coast Line, draws attention to the way sybil unrest unlike the traditional avant-garde poetics, focused only on the cultural and aesthetic, expands outward into the cultural and political social worlds. This book marks its space in 21st century poetics in indelible ink. The focus away from an "I" and onto an interactive and malleable subjective takes this foray into the avant-garde and makes it into "a critique of 'human' as a species," as Sonnet L'Abbe remarks in the Autumn 2011 issue of Canadian Literature. sybil unrest is clever, filled with delirious wordplay, deprecation and a subtle humour that will catch you unawares and make you laugh out loud.
