Returning to Russia from a sanitarium in Switzerland, the Christ-like epileptic Prince Myshkin finds himself enmeshed in a tangle of love, torn between two women—the notorious kept woman Nastasya and the pure Aglaia—both involved, in turn, with the corrupt, money-hungry Ganya. In the end, Myshkin’s honesty, goodness, and integrity are shown to be unequal to the moral emptiness of those around him.

The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky,General Press Summary

After his great portrayal of a guilty man in Crime and Punishment, Dostoevsky set out in The Idiot to portray a man of pure innocence. The twenty-six-year-old Prince Myshkin, following a stay of several years in a Swiss sanatorium, returns to Russia to collect an inheritance and ‘be among people’. Even before he reaches home he meets the dark Rogozhin, a rich merchant's son whose obsession with the beautiful Nastasya Filippovna eventually draws all three of them into a tragic denouement. In Petersburg the prince finds himself a stranger in a society obsessed with money, power, and manipulation. Scandal escalates to murder as Dostoevsky traces the surprising effect of this ‘positively beautiful man’ on the people around him, leading to a final scene that is one of the most powerful in all of world literature.

The Idiot (illustrated) by Fyodor Dostoevsky Summary

"Idiot" is the fifth novel by Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky. The novel was first published in the journal "Russian Herald" from January 1868 to February 1869. It is one of the most beloved works of the writer who most fully expressed both the moral and philosophical position of Dostoevsky and his artistic principles in the 1860s. The novel "Idiot" became a realization of the old creative ideas of Dostoevsky, his main character — Prince Lev Nikolayevich Myshkin, according to the author's judgment, is "a truly wonderful personality", he is the embodiment of goodness and Christian morality. And precisely because of his disinterestedness, kindness and honesty, the extraordinary love for people in the world of money and hypocrisy, the environs call Myshkin an "idiot". Pretty illustrations by Valentyna Mashtak provide you with new impressions from reading this legendary story.

Dostoevsky's the Idiot and the Ethical Foundations of Narrative by Sarah Young Summary

In considering Dostoevsky's 'The Idiot', a novel less easily defined in terms of plot and ideas than his other major fictional works, Sarah Young addresses problems in the novel unresolved by previous interpretations, and in doing so fills a significant gap in Dostoevsky studies. 'Dostoevsky's The Idiot and the Ethical Foundations of Narrative' provides an innovative theoretical framework for an analysis that integrates structural and narratological considerations with thematic (religious and ethical) aspects, by focusing on the characters' interactivity as the most fundamental level on which the ethical systems of the novel are enacted. It examines the questions of what ethical bases are put forward by the novel, what faith-issues and philosophical world-views they derive from, and how, in terms of structuring and narration rather than simply thematically, they are presented in the novel. For the first time, through the concept of scripting, the author shows how the ethical becomes the foundation for the narratological in The Idiot. No other book on Dostoevsky has addressed the question of ethics, which is so important to the study of Dostoevsky, particularly in the light of recent work on the religious dimension of his novels, within the context of narrative and Bakhtinian dialogue. This substantial new work will appeal to academics, postgraduates and undergraduates working on Dostoevsky and the nineteenth- and twentieth-century Russian novel in general; as well as scholars in the fields of literary theory, including Bakhtin studies, narratology, literature and ethics.

The Idiot by John Kendrick Bangs Summary

For some weeks after the happy event which transformed the popular Mrs. Smithers into the charming Mrs. John Pedagog all went well at that lady's select home for single gentlemen. It was only proper that during the honey-moon, at least, of the happy couple hostilities between the Idiot and his fellow-boarders should cease. It was expecting too much of mankind, however, to look for a continued armistice, and the morning arrived when Nature once more reasserted herself, and trouble began. Just what it was that prompted the remark no one knows, but it happened that the Idiot did say that he thought that, after all, life on a canal-boat had its advantages. Mr. Pedagog, who had come into the dining-room in a slightly irritable frame of mind, induced perhaps by Mrs. Pedagog's insistence that as he was now part proprietor of the house he should be a little more prompt in making his contributions towards its maintenance, chose to take the remark as implying a reflection upon the way things were managed in the household....

The Idiot by Dennis Patrick Slattery Summary

In Dostoevsky's novel, The Idiot, Prince Myshkin is more an angelic spirit than he is a man; he is a complex metaphor for fantasy, a mode of consciousness that is divorced from the earth and one which envisions human nature as univocal, unified, innocent, and free from contradiction. Drawing on phenomenology to interrogate those common human dimensions of lived space and temporality, the study examines The Idiot to articulate the way in which fantasy offers not an imagined eschatology rooted in the human order, but rather a futile design to imparadise a world already fallen. For diseased, Dostoevsky's prince is a presence that reminds the community of what is absent.
