The Complete Works of Jane Austen by Jane Austen,General Press Summary

The Complete Novels of Jane Austen brings together the indelible characters, picturesque locations, and masterful storytelling of Jane Austen, one of the most beloved and celebrated authors of all time. This special ebook edition includes all of Austen's published works: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Love and Friendship and Other Early Works, Lady Susan, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. These novel contain some of the most brilliant, dazzling prose in the English language. In a publishing career that spanned less than a decade, Jane Austen used the romantic endeavours of her well-plotted characters as a stage from which to address issues of gender politics and class-consciousness rarely expressed in her day. Through her vivacious and spirited heroines and their circle, she painted vivid portraits of English middle-class life as the eighteenth century came to a close. Each of these novels is a love story and a story about marriage—marriage for love, for financial security, for social status. But they are not mere romances. Ironic, comic, and wise, they are masterly studies of the society Austen observed. This collection features the following works: Emma Lady Susan Love and Friendship and Other Early Works Mansfield Park Northanger Abbey Persuasion Pride and Prejudice Sense and Sensibility (The Complete Works of Jane Austen by Jane Austen, 9789380914794)

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen Summary

Jane Austen’s first published novel, Sense and Sensibility, is a witty satire of the sentimental novel, a popular genre in Britain throughout the 1790s and the Regency. When it first appeared in 1811, the words in its title carried significant cultural weight beyond the confines of the novel, and into both popular and learned discourse. Through her dual heroines, Austen addresses, and satirizes, notions of sense and sensibility, and engages with the issues of inheritance, marriage, and love. The story concerns two sisters: the level-headed Elinor and the passionate and impulsive Marianne. When their father dies, his son by a previous marriage assumes possession of the family home. Marianne and Elinor, left to the care of their mercenary brother John and his wife Fanny, must remove to a cottage with their mother. Each sister meets a man in whom she is interested, and as with other Austen novels, requited love does not come easily. This newly annotated edition offers a thorough and perceptive introduction and a wide range of carefully selected contextual materials that further explore the term “sensibility.”

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen Summary

This first of Jane Austen's published novels is the story of two starkly different English sisters: Elinor Dashwood, the epitome of prudence and self-control, and her younger, more impetuous sister Marianne, who embodies emotion, openness, and sheer enthusiasm. To each comes the sorrow of unhappy love: Elinor desires a man who is promised to another, while Marianne loses her heart to a scoundrel who jilts her. Their mutual suffering brings a closer understanding between the two sisters--and true love finally triumphs when sense gives way to sensibility and sensibility gives way to sense. Newly designed and typeset in a modern 6-by-9-inch format by Waking Lion Press.

The Language of Jane Austen (Routledge Revivals) by Norman Page Summary

First published in 1972, Norman Page’s seminal study of The Language of Jane Austen seeks to demonstrate both the exceptional nature and the degree of subtlety of Jane Austen’s use of language. As well as examining the staple items of her vocabulary and some of the characteristic patterns of her syntax, attention is paid to her use of dialogue and of the letter form. The aim of the study is not simply to analyse linguistic qualities for their own sake but to employ close verbal analysis to enrich the critical understanding of Jane Austen’s novels.
