The Pure Concept of Diplomacy by José Calvet de Magalhães Summary

This is a pioneer theoretical study of diplomacy from the viewpoint of political science. It defines diplomacy precisely, and distinguishes it from the other institutions with which it is often confused. The work commences with a historical analysis of diplomacy through the ages in order to afford a theoretical description of the concept. After defining the term, Calvet de Magalhaes goes on to examine the value of current ideas concerning diplomacy. He also describes deviations from normal diplomatic practice, such as backchannel diplomacy, combat diplomacy, and espionage. The work concludes with a detailed precis of the different elements of diplomatic activity.

The Pure Theory of International Trade by Miltiades Chacholiades Summary

There has long been a need for a systematic introduction to the modern pure theory of international trade that would take the student through a careful introduction to the tools of analysis and the main logical propositions into the application of the theory to practical problems of international economic policy. Trade theory should be part and parcel of price theory, distinguished only by the fact that other countries form part of the natural opportunities--and natural constraints--that a country confronts in its efforts to bend nature to its desire to produce utility-yielding goods and services; but its exposition is often confused by the attachment of its expositors to obsolete problems and backward analytical techniques. This book covers in detail classical, neoclassical, and modern theories of international trade, with special attention to problems of equilibrium, growth, and welfare, and discusses the work of all major contributors in this field from Ricardo and Mill through Meade, Heckscher, and Ohlin, to the growth models of Johnson, Solow, and Uzawa. All problems are clearly stated and the easiest and most convenient solutions are sought in each case, with the more technical topics in the field discussed in several chapters and appendixes that may be omitted for less advanced students without interrupting the continuity of the book. The book's coverage is complete and entirely up-to-date. It is written primarily for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in international trade, but it will also serve as an important reference tool for professional economists working in this field and will be of considerable interest to students and practitioners dealing with problems of economic development and international business relationships more generally. Miltiades Chacholiades studied at the Athens School of Economics and Business Science in Athens, Greece, and received his doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has taught at New York University and the University of California in Los Angeles, and is presently Professor of Economics at Georgia State University. His articles have been published in a number of international professional economic journals.

The Pure in Heart by James Aniekpon Summary

The Pure in Heart are truly the chosen ones who can and will behold the face of God here on earth and hereafter in glory, as revealed by Christ in the gospel. Do you cherish unusual hatred, bitterness, and unforgiving spirit in your heart? Or do you condemn, criticise, and judge others after the flesh and walk in sight instead of faith? Then you need a new and pure heart, cleansed and holy unto God to fellowship with His Spirit and others and enjoy His abundant blessings. In this book, you will discover • that every good thing and gift comes from God alone, • that only those who have received the Holy Spirit and are living in righteousness and holiness in obedience to God’s Word are the pure in heart who shall behold God, • that it is when the Word of God is ministered in faith and with power that wicked hearts and devils can be exposed and expelled, and • how you can have a pure heart.

Anarchy in the Pure Land by Justin Ritzinger Summary

Anarchy in the Pure Land investigates the twentieth-century reinvention of the cult of Maitreya, the future Buddha, conceived by the reformer Taixu and promoted by the Chinese Buddhist reform movement. The cult presents an apparent anomaly: It shows precisely the kind of concern for ritual, supernatural beings, and the afterlife that the reformers supposedly rejected in the name of "modernity." This book shows that, rather than a concession to tradition, the reimagining of ideas and practices associated with Maitreya was an important site for formulating a Buddhist vision of modernity. Justin Ritzinger argues that the cult of Maitreya represents an attempt to articulate a new constellation of values, integrating novel understandings of the good, clustered around modern visions of utopia, with the central Buddhist goal of Buddhahood. In Part One he traces the roots of this constellation to Taixu's youthful career as an anarchist. Part Two examines its articulation in the Maitreya School's theology and its social development from its inception to World War II. Part Three looks at its subsequent decline and contemporary legacy within and beyond orthodox Buddhism. Through these investigations, Anarchy in the Pure Land develops a new framework for alternative understandings of modernity in Buddhism.

Fundamentals of the Pure Spinor Formalism by Joost Hoogeveen Summary

This thesis presents recent developments within the pure spinor formalism, which has simplified amplitude computations in perturbative string theory, especially when spacetime fermions are involved. Firstly the worldsheet action of both the minimal and the non-minimal pure spinor formalism is derived from first principles, i.e. from an action with two dimensional diffeomorphism and Weyl invariance. Secondly the decoupling of unphysical states in the minimal pure spinor formalism is proved.Joost Hoogeveen (1984) studied physics and mathematics, initially at the University of Amsterdam. In 2004 he continued these studies at the University of Cambridge. In 2005 he started his PhD research at the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the University of Amsterdam.

Bless the Pure and Humble by Nicholas George Malavis Summary

Nicholas George Malavis's well-reasoned and sophisticated study of the development of petroleum regulation offers historical and legal analysis of the basic issues affecting property rights and the public interest and traces the legal moves that shaped a new regulatory system centered around the Texas Railroad Commission. It provides a fascinating view of the multiple roles of lawyers in putting the new system in place as they worked for a variety of clients to resolve the serious conflicts plaguing the oil industry in its efforts to manage overproduction in the 1920s and 1930s. Access to the internal records of Vinson and Elkins has allowed Malavis to provide readers a rare view inside the world of lawyer-client relations. He describes how prominent attorney James Elkins and others applied their legal talents, negotiating skills, and political influence to fight for solutions to the problems that would help define the parameters of the new prorating system.

The Pure Land by Alan Spence Summary

The Pure Land resurrects the dramatic life of Thomas Glover, the Scottish businessman who helped overthrow the shogun and whose tumultuous love affairs inspired the opera Madame Butterfly and the musical Miss Saigon. Alan Spence has transformed this true story into an unforgettable hundred-year saga that culminates in the annihilation of Nagasaki. Thomas Glover is a gutsy eighteen-year-old in Aberdeen in 1858 who grasps the chance of escape to foreign lands and takes a posting as a trader in Japan. Within ten years he amasses a great fortune, helps to modernize Japan, and, on the other side of the law, brings about the overthrow of the shogun. Yet beneath Glover’s astonishing success lies a man cut to the heart. His love affair with a courtesan a woman who, unknown to him, would bear him the son for whom he had always longed would form a tragedy so heartrending that the story became immortal. Called a page-turner of the first order . . . an engaging and vivid historical novel, but also a meditative work of art” by The Times of London, The Pure Land is a modern epic, a rattling good adventure, a devastating love story, and a journey of the spirit.

The P.U.R.E. Man by Rica R. Jones, MBA Summary

In a world where a woman’s “independence” has become cliché, many women have begun to cling more to “dependence.” As a single parent, I can relate to having to maintain survival for my son and me independently. Although ultimately I understand who my Source is and I solely depend on God for everything, I can honestly say, “I am ready to start depending on him – my mate.” The P.U.R.E. Man provides both men and women with attainable goals to maintaining a healthy and promising relationship. In this book, author Rica R. Jones shows women how to attract and hold on to a good man, and men how to recognize and acknowledge a good woman. Through her personal journey of failed relationships, and from the conversations with insight of other women, Jones creates a new definition of “P.U.R.E.” through exploration of the acronym. Rica R. Jones earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Phoenix – Charlotte, North Carolina. She has mentored many young women through inspiring them to be the women God is calling them to be. A Contribution to the Pure Theory of Taxation by Roger Guesnerie Summary

This book investigates the way in which tax systems affect economic efficiency and the distribution of welfare. It examines within a unified framework questions that are usually treated in different areas of the literature: institutional economics, positive economics, normative economics, and political economics. It adheres to the rigorous standards of pure theory while paying careful attention to the policy relevance of the arguments. Tax systems are viewed as information extracting devices that generate sets of equilibria of complex geometry. A tax reform methodology is proposed that sheds light on optimal taxes. Social conflicts in the determination of taxes are shown to have effects on social cohesion.

The Pure Food, Drink, and Drug Crusaders, 1879Ð1914 by Lorine Swainston Goodwin Summary

Under a likeness of President Theodore Roosevelt in the Library of Congress, a plaque lists the Pure Food and Drink Law of 1906 as one of the three landmark achievements of his administration. Few authorities would disagree. Designed to ensure the safety of foods, drinks and drugs, the law was one of the first pieces of social legislation enacted in the United States. Among the most enthusiastic and persistent crusaders for the bill’s passage were a wide array of women’s groups, many politically active for the first time. Based in large part on primary sources, this work examines the many groups involved in the passage of the Pure Food and Drink Law and how their work affected American society. Part One examines the origins of the movement and why women became so involved. Part Two focuses on the primary groups involved in the law’s passage, such as the National Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. How it was that such diverse groups rallied around this issue is also explored. The industrial and political opposition to the law and how the crusaders overcame it is covered in Part Three, along with details on how the law’s proponents were able to pressure the U.S. Congress into passing it and how they worked to see it fully implemented.

The Pure in Heart by Martin Burrell Summary

This is a record of how church happens even when the institution isnt looking how people are gathered together around Jesus Christ by the sheer force of the Spirits leading. God constantly goes ahead of us in mission not least in communities many Christians dont know about, or even dont much want to know about! It is a moving and inspiring testimony to Gods creative liberty at work in our times. Dr. Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury As the Romanies began to share their stories, many of us found ourselves in tears as we realized our own poverty. They were such a blessing to us in bringing us back to hear from God. For God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. We heard the challenge to lay down our cleverness and pride and come in simplicity, as these wonderful people had. On Sunday we truly saw the power of God at work and seeing that has challenged us to come back to simple faith in Jesus." Revd Shiela Porter, St Georges Deal. Martin tells a very moving story of discovering where God is at work in mission and following where he leads. It is significant that the resulting fresh expression of church among the Romany community in Kent stretched him to new understandings of mission and the church and to rediscover practices for identifying and developing indigenous leadership. We believe these lessons are transferable to many other mission contexts in our plural culture today.
