Shakespeare's King Lear with The Tempest by Mark Allen McDonald Summary

Although he is considered to be the world's greatest dramatist, Shakespeare seems to have escaped the detection of thinkers on politics and the philosophic tradition of thought on man. Shakespeare's 'King Lear' with 'The Tempest' is Mark McDonald's inquiry into the political philosophy of William Shakespeare through a reading of King Lear with reference to The Tempest. McDonald follows an argument connecting King Lear to the question of natural right and to changes in the orders of the western world at the beginnings of modernity.

The Tempest by Trevor R. Griffiths Summary

How might the storm be staged for a performance of The Tempest? What do Caliban and Ariel look like? How might the speaking of significantly placed lines potentially affect our enjoyment of the play? The extended commentary at the heart of this Handbook helps readers to see and hear The Tempest as they read, and explore its theatrical potential in terms of such staging challenges. The Handbook also includes: - sections that discuss the play's text and early performances, and the theatrical and cultural context in which it was created - quotations from original documents and a wide variety of responses from later critics which allow the reader direct access to contemporary thought and to developments in critical assessments of the play - coverage of key theatrical interpretations by figures such as Charles Kean, Beerbohm Tree, John Gielgud, Patrick Stewart and Simon Sussell Beale - exploration of major film productions including Forbidden Planet, Prospero's Books and Derek Jarman's Tempest. This Handbook is a stimulating resource, as well as an excellent guide to the 'rich and strange' life of one of Shakespeare's most enigmatic plays.

On the Date, Sources and Design of ShakespeareÕs The Tempest by Roger A. Stritmatter,Lynne Kositsky Summary

This book challenges a longstanding and deeply ingrained belief in Shakespearean studies that The Tempest--long supposed to be Shakespeare's last play--was not written until 1611. In the course of investigating this proposition, which has not received the critical inquiry it deserves, a number of subsidiary and closely related interpretative puzzles come sharply into focus. These include the play's sources of New World imagery; its festival symbolism and structure; its relationship to William Strachey's True Reportory account of the 1609 Bermuda wreck of the Sea Venture (not published until 1625)--and the tangled history of how and why scholars have for so long misunderstood these matters. Publication of some preliminary elements of the authors' arguments in leading Shakespearean journals (starting in 2007) ignited a controversy that became part of the critical history. This book presents the case in full for the first time.
