This Transforming Word: Cycle C: Commentary on the Readings for Sundays and Feast Days of Cycle C of the Lectionary Through 2025, Including Full Scrip by Alice Camille Summary

Familiarity often breeds contempt… or at least boredom, and the readings for Sundays and feast days in the church calendar are familiar. So how can we keep the transforming word of God from lulling our minds and hearts like a warm bath, having little or no effect to encourage us to drift into daydream? One answer is to listen, and that is what this book is about: preparing to listen. For only if we have been mulling the words of Scripture for a while, allowing them to seep into our subconscious, can we be fully attentive when we hear them again at Mass. Another answer is to read the passages we are about to hear in a new and different language, one that forces us to sit up and take notice and think, ôOh, thatÆs what the author was trying to say." And a third answer is to get ourselves a guide to the text, someone who has studied the Bible and spent her professional lifetime trying to navigate and explain it. This transforming Word offers all three: Preparation new translation and an experienced guide. Alice Camille is a serious student and award-winning writer on the Scripture who makes God's word come alive in new and exciting ways. The Message: Catholic/Ecumenical Edition is a fresh, contemporary, compelling, and faith-filled American English translation from the ancient languages by Eugene Peterson, with the additional Deuterocanonical writings translated by William Griffin. And the preparation will be done by you, whether you are lay or ordained homilist or member of the congregation, Bible expert or neophyte. This volume contains all the readings in the Roman Catholic Lectionary for Cycle C. through 2025. Companion volumes are available for Cycles A and B. Book jacket.

Transforming words by Jean-Pierre Noppen Summary

Hitherto, the of the Methodist revival has received only moderate, and mainly descriptive, attention. This study moves beyond description and approaches the phenomenon from a "discourse" angle. A corpus-based investigation of the workings of Methodism in its many different discourse aspects highlights how and why Methodism in its early Wesleyan stage was remarkably efficient in providing a multi-modal message which answered the needs and aspirations of the underprivileged. A critical assessment shows that there is little reason to indict the Wesleyans with any manipulative intent. Wesley's discourse did, however, contain some elements which were misunderstood and misapplied when later Methodism lost its Wesleyan touch; but the Methodist revival as a whole cannot be indicted with deliberate manipulation of the working masses.

Taking the Long View by David Steinmetz Summary

Taking the Long View argues in a series of engagingly written essays that remembering the past is essential for men and women who want to function effectively in the present--for without some knowledge of their own past, neither individuals nor institutions know where they have been or where they are going. The book illustrates its thesis with tough-minded examples from the Church's life and thought, ranging from more abstract problems like the theoretical role of historical criticism to such painfully concrete issues as the commandment of Jesus to forgive unforgivable wrongs.

The Transforming Believer by Zulibe Turner Summary

I saw the Lord delivers me and my parents and brothers and sisters from death. Death came to our door to threaten our lives in the form of ‘Rebels’ during the civil war in Sierra Leone. It came in the form of heavily armed insurgents dressed up in army uniforms holding guns and machine guns in army trucks never seen in my life by then. Disgust with evil and desperation to kill and to destroy they call aloud for all the occupants in our home to come out and shot rapidly at our gated fence in Sierra Leone. And soon we saw them one after the other jumped out their truck and violently thump the gate. At the face of death when I imagine as already told by some of our friends of young girls that were already raped and brutally killed my heart fainted. The smell of death as horrible as it smell did not consumed us. With our last hope we cried out to the Lord and sort the face of God to deliver us from death and miraculously these people suddenly left our front gate without any of us been hurt. They shouted as they went “we are coming back” but I tell you this, the Lord never permitted them to ‘come back’. The lord rescued us. Also, lost in sea when all hopes disappeared, were the rumbling thunders and lightens stroke like consuming fire God became the captain and in the mist of hopelessness brought deliverance. The Lord has constantly and continuously been with me up to this hour in my life.

The Succession Principle

The Succession Principle by David L. McKenna Summary

Succession is the hot topic in leadership development, but the subject has rarely been addressed in Christian literature. As a college, university, and seminary president who experienced three successions in leadership, David McKenna is eminently qualified to speak on the subject. He begins by introducing us to the Succession Principle: What we bring to leadership is important. What we do in leadership is more important. What we leave from our leadership is most important of all. Once our priority shifts from success to succession, the door is open to read John 17 as the Prayer of Succession for Jesus. In this final report, Jesus transfers to his disciples and to us the same enduring trust, transforming truth, and unifying love that he has received for leadership from his Father. With these legacies come specific gifts of succession to complete our task, develop disciples, advance the kingdom, and see the fulfillment of Christ's promise, "Greater things than these shall you do." Succession in the spirit of Christ, then, is written not in terms of success, but in the seamless transition of sustainable gifts culminating in the gift of greater things.

The Transforming Power of Faith by Pope Benedict XVI Summary

"Having faith in the Lord is not something that involves solely our intelligence, the area of intellectual knowledge; rather, it is a change that involves our life, our whole self: feelings, heart, intelligence, will, corporeity, emotions, and human relationships. With faith everything truly changes." So Pope Benedict XVI introduced his catecheses for the Year of Faith, a series of sixteen talks given at his weekly audience from October 2012 to the end of his papacy in February 2013. These talks explore how and why faith is relevant in the contemporary world. How can we come to certainty about things that cannot be calculated or scientifically confirmed? What does God's revelation mean for our daily lives? How can the hunger of the human heart be fulfilled? Offering the guidance of biblical exegesis, pastoral exhortation, and brotherly encouragement, Pope Benedict seeks to answer these questions and many others.

God’s People on the Move by vanThanh Nguyen,John M. Prior Summary

On the highways and byways of every continent, hundreds of millions of immigrants are constantly on the move. Because of growing inequalities of wealth caused by unregulated economic globalization, political and ethnic conflicts, environmental degradation, instant communication, and viable means of transportation, more and more people are migrating than ever before. Crossing international borders, whether compelled or voluntarily, is a major characteristic of our present epoch. No countries or regions are immune from this reality. Facing the growing scope, complexity and impact of the current worldwide phenomenon, God's People on the Move seeks to develop appropriate biblical and missiological responses to the issue of human migration and dislocation. The book is divided into two major sections. Part one, "Biblical Perspectives on Migration and Mission," contains six essays that focus on various biblical themes or texts that deal with migration and mission. Part two, "Contemporary Issues of Migration and Mission," contains six essays that address different immigration issues around the world. The contributors to this volume are women and men from different ethnic backgrounds, working and living on five continents. The internationality of the contributors gives this volume a unique global perspective on migration and mission.
